Analogue quantum gravity phenomenology from a two-component Bose–Einstein condensate

چکیده

We present an analogue spacetime model that reproduces the salient features of the most common ansatz for quantum gravity phenomenology. We do this by investigating a system of two coupled Bose–Einstein condensates. This system can be tuned to have two “phonon” modes (one massive, one massless) which share the same limiting speed in the hydrodynamic approximation [Phys. Rev. D72 (2005) 044020, gr-qc/0506029; cond-mat/0409639]. The system nevertheless possesses (possibly nonuniversal) Lorentz violating terms at very high energies where “quantum pressure” becomes important. We investigate the physical interpretation of the relevant finetuning conditions, and discuss the possible lessons and hints that this analogue spacetime could provide for the phenomenology of real physical quantum gravity. In particular we show that the effective field theory of quasi-particles in such an emergent spacetime does not exhibit the so called “naturalness problem”.

The cosmological constant: a lesson from Bose–Einstein condensates

The cosmological constant is one of the most pressing problems in modern physics. In this Letter, we address the issue of its nature and computation using an analogue gravity standpoint as a toy model for an emergent gravity scenario. Even if it is well known that phonons in some condense matter systems propagate like a quantum field on a curved spacetime, only recently it has been shown that t...

Cosmological constant: a lesson from Bose-Einstein condensates.

The cosmological constant is one of the most pressing problems in modern physics. We address this issue from an emergent gravity standpoint, by using an analogue gravity model. Indeed, the dynamics of the emergent metric in a Bose-Einstein condensate can be described by a Poisson-like equation with a vacuum source term reminiscent of a cosmological constant. The direct computation of this term ...

Production of Multiple Rb Condensates and Atom Lasers by Rf Coupling

One of the major goals in the study of Bose–Einstein condensation (BEC) in dilute atomic gases has been the realization and development of atom lasers. An atom laser may be understood as a source of coherent matter waves. One can extract coherent matter waves from a magnetically trapped Bose condensate. Schemes to couple the atomic beam out of the magnetic trap have been demonstrated [1, 2, 3, ...

Gravity stands out among the fundamental interactions because of its apparent incompatibility with having a quantum description. Moreover, thermodynamic aspects of gravitation theory appears as puzzling features of some classical solutions such as black holes. These and other aspects of gravitational theories have recently lead to the proposal that gravity might not be a fundamental interaction...
